Playgrounds / Chapter 6 · Case studies and the mini-project / C6.6 Try it: your mini-project against the rubric The course marks the mini-project out of 20 on five criteria. Tick what your design already shows. Your ticks stay in this browser only.
Specification · 4 marks · 0 % Every required motion is listed. Each motion has its load characteristic (torque, inertia, active or passive). The duty cycle is stated (times, starts per hour, S-type). Performance targets are numbers: speed range, accuracy, cycle time. Environmental and safety constraints are stated. Control philosophy · 4 marks · 0 % Each controlled axis has its load classification (constant torque, variable torque, constant power). Drive type and control mode per axis, with the quadrants it works in. Sensors and feedback are chosen for each loop. Interlocks and safety functions are listed. The operator interface is defined. Coordination between axes is described (sequence, master-slave, flow matching). Component sizing · 5 marks · 0 % Motor power and torque come from the load and duty analysis (Chapter 1). Each drive matches its quadrants and control quality. Braking or regeneration is sized from the generated power. Protection is chosen: semiconductor fuses, thermistors, a type B RCD if needed. Harmonics and motor-cable length are checked against the supply and the motor. Torque, power and duty margins are stated. Selections refer to manufacturer data. Safety and reliability · 3 marks · 0 % Fail-safe braking where a load can run away. Safety functions are in safety hardware, not only in the PLC program. Redundancy where a stop is itself dangerous, and only there. The relevant standards are cited. Commissioning and proof tests of each safety function are planned. Presentation and defence · 4 marks · 0 % Clear block diagrams and sequence descriptions. Simulation evidence compared with the specification. Assumptions are stated. The biggest technical risk and its mitigation are identified. The group has rehearsed answering technical questions. Checklist coverage weighted by the rubric: 0.0 / 20.
This is coverage, not a mark: the rubric rewards the quality of the reasoning behind each tick. Bands: 16–20 professional-quality design; 12–15 sound with minor gaps; 10–11 acceptable but an unjustified selection or an untreated safety requirement; below 10 not defensible.
